Cancelliere renews Glasgow Warriors contract
One of the club’s standout performers across the 2022/23 season has put pen to paper on a new deal with Glasgow Warriors, after Sebastian Cancelliere committed his future to the Scotstoun squad subject to visa.
The news gives Franco Smith’s squad a further boost as preparations continue for this weekend’s BKT United Rugby Championship quarter-final clash with Munster, as Scotstoun plays host to a first domestic knockout match since 2019.
Having first signed for the club ahead of the 2021/22 campaign, the 29-year-old has become one of the northern hemisphere’s most in-form wingers in 2022/23, scoring nine tries in 14 appearances across all competitions to date.
The Argentinian’s skill with ball in hand has seen him feature in the top 10 for defenders beaten, clean breaks and metres made in the BKT URC this season, causing chaos for opposition defences.
His try-scoring prowess also saw him become the first winger to score nine tries or more in a campaign since Tommy Seymour in 2018/19, with two of those tries coming in unforgettable fashion in January’s win over the DHL Stormers.
The winger has become a firm favourite with the Warrior Nation since his arrival at Scotstoun, and was selected for a March training camp with Argentina as the build-up to this year’s Rugby World Cup continues.
“I’m extremely happy to be staying at Scotstoun,” Cancelliere told glasgowwarriors.org.
“We’ve got an incredibly talented group of players here, and I feel like we’re really building something as a group.
“I love the way we play rugby and I feel so comfortable in the systems and setup we play here. It’s the way I love to play and this season has been so much fun to be involved with.
“Glasgow is also a fantastic city to live and work – some people might have concerns about the weather, but those sort of things don’t matter when you love being here! My wife and I are really settled here and I’m enjoying every part of it.
“We have a massive home game this Saturday and the supporters showed how much they care about the club down at the Scarlets last weekend – we love to see them getting involved and enjoying it, because we couldn’t do it without them. I love representing this club and the Warrior Nation.”
Head Coach Smith added: “We’re pleased to be able to secure Sebastian’s services for the next couple of seasons – he is a model professional and someone with whom we love to work as a coaching group.
“His drive and determination to be the best version of himself as a player is seen by the work he puts in on the training field, and his performances this season have been excellent.
“He has fully bought in to what we are looking to build here and we look forward to continuing to work with him.”
