SP Energy Networks Championship Final | Match Review
Marr College played a fantastic game against Ayrshire school rivals Belmont Academy to lift the trophy of the 2024 SP Energy Networks Championship.
Three rounds of matches decided the winner. Kicking off with the girl’s teams, Belmont Academy showed a strong start. They scored two tries early in the first half to take the lead. Yet, Marr didn’t back down. They struck back with two tries themselves to level the score. Each team added another try apiece to make with Marr taking the edge with a fourth try going into half-time.
In the second half, Marr’s girls squad capitalised on their strength and agile runners. Whilst Belmont fought back and didn’t let up the content, Marr girls took the first rubber, winning 8 tries to 6.
Both the S1 and S2 boys’ teams kicked off after the girls. Both games were try for try, players dodging through gaps in the opposition’s defensive. Marr continued to display dominance in the S1 match, going on to beat Belmont 10 tries to 7.
The S2 match ended in style with a last minute try to give Belmont the advantage. Belmont’s S2s won 11 tries to Marr’s 10. Yet, Marr obtained two rubbers to Belmont’s one, ensuring that they took the title of 2024 SP Energy Networks Championship Winners.
The games were followed by a post-match event. Hosted by Glasgow Warriors and SP Energy Networks, the students had a Q&A with four Glasgow Warriors players: Stafford McDowall, Facundo Cordero, Holland Bogan, and Eve Thomson. The pupils also got to participate in a stem quiz and look back at their tournament highlights.
Head of Rugby at Marr College Colin Sturgeon said: “It was a great afternoon of rugby at Scotstoun, the sun was shining, and we got three cracking matches. Our pupils were delighted to get over the line and lift the trophy for the first time.
“We are incredibly grateful to Glasgow Warriors and SP Energy Networks for providing our pupils with these opportunities to create great memories with their friends and teammates!”
